Gabriel Vargas is a documentary cinematographer and surf photographer based in Santa Barbara, CA. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, he developed a passion for the ocean, the environment and photography at an early age.

He began his career as a freelance photographer in 2013 after completing a bachelor's degree in photography from Universidad Sagrado Corazón in Santurce, PR. His passion for riding waves and photography led him on a path of discovery and exploring new waves around the globe.

During the winter of 2015, he was sent on assignment for 65 days to Nazare, Portugal to film & co-produce the first feature length surf documentary “Red Chargers”. A film that focuses on capturing the unique lives of big wave surfers and the teamwork involved in riding the world's largest waves. “Red Chargers” won Best Feature Film in the 2017 San Diego Surf Film Festival and Best Surf Film in the 2016 Waimea Ocean Film Festival.

After wrapping up the production phase of “Red Chargers”, he relocated to Los Angeles, CA. Since then, he has collaborated on multiple projects as a freelance cinematographer and has lensed over fifty episodes of UHD adventure-reality television in over 10 countries for the Ultra HD Europe based network, INsight TV; including the first action sports reality series shot entirely in HDR (High Dynamic Range).

His work has been published by companies like INsight TV, AMG Mercedes-Benz, Outside Television, TERN International, Tag Heuer, Red Bull, Volcom East, Eastern Surf Magazine, Riptide Magazine, Surfline, The Inertia, Pacific Longboarder Magazine, Surfspot Magazine, Asociación Profesional Surfing Puerto Rico, DisasterL Magazine, Y No Había Luz, Circo Nacional De Puerto Rico and The San Juan Water Beach Club Hotel.

During his free time, he can be found surfing or swimming in the ocean with a camera on his hands and a pair of swim fins strapped to his feet.
