Gabriel Vargas is a Director of Photography based in Santa Barbara, CA that specializes in adventure-reality series, action sports, documentary and branded content.
Growing up by the caribbean sea and mountainscapes of Puerto Rico, Gabriel developed a passion for surfing, cameras & art at an early age. In 2013 he graduated with a bachelor's degree in photography from Universidad Sagrado Corazón in Santurce, PR. His passion for riding waves and documenting island surf culture took him down the path of becoming a surf photographer. His work has been featured by national and international surf magazines and publications like; His work has been commissioned by brands, magazines & companies like Volcom East; Eastern Surf Magazine; Riptide Magazine; Surfline; The Inertia; Pacific Longboarder Magazine; Surfspot Magazine; Asociación Profesional Surfing Puerto Rico; DisasterL Magazine; Y No Había Luz, Circo Nacional De Puerto Rico & The San Juan Water Club.
During the winter of 2015, Gabriel was sent on assignment to Nazare, Portugal for a total of 65 days to film & co-produce his first feature lenght documentary RED CHARGERS. A film that focuses on capturing the unique lives of big wave surfers and the teamwork involved in riding the world's largest waves. RED CHARGERS won Best Feature Film in the 2017 San Diego Surf Film Festival and Best Surf Film in the 2016 Waimea Ocean Film Festival.
He moved to Los Angeles in 2016 and since then he has lensed over fifty episodes of UHD adventure-reality television in over 10 countries for the Ultra HD european network, INsightTV; including the first action sports reality series shot entirely in HDR (High Dynamic Range). Clients include AMG Mercedes-Benz, Outside Television, TERN International, Tag Heuer, Red Bull & INsight TV.
